Maui Onion Meatballs Recipe
Servings: 4
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 25 minutes
Ingredients:
For the Meatballs:
• 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or turkey
• 1 egg, beaten
• 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
• 1 Packet of Maui Onion dry blend mix
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley (optional)
For the Gravy:
• 2 tbsp unsalted butter
• 1 small onion, thinly sliced
• 1 tbsp Maui onion dry blend mix
• 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
• 1 1/2 cups beef or chicken broth
• 1/4 cup heavy cream (optional, for richness)
• Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Meatballs:
• In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, beaten egg, breadcrumbs, Maui onion dry blend mix, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined; do not overmix.
• Roll the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and place them on a baking sheet or plate.
2. Cook the Meatballs:
• Heat a large skillet over medium heat with a drizzle of oil. Cook the meatballs in batches, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides and cooked through (about 8–10 minutes). Remove and set aside.
3. Make the Gravy:
• In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté until golden and softened, about 5–7 minutes.
• Sprinkle the Maui onion dry blend mix and flour over the onions, stirring to coat. Cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
• Gradually add the broth, whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Bring to a simmer and let the sauce thicken, about 3–5 minutes.
• Stir in the heavy cream (if using), and season with salt and pepper.
4. Combine and Serve:
• Add the cooked meatballs back into the skillet, spooning the gravy over them. Let them simmer in the sauce for 5 minutes to absorb the flavors.
• Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Pro Tips:
• For extra moisture, add 1 tbsp of milk to the meatball mixture.
• Use a cookie scoop to ensure evenly sized meatballs.
